"Pam Grier" by Lonnie Franks, Arkansas
Lonnie is a prolific artist who has donated more than 30 beautiful, colorful works to us. The inspiration for his subject matter are "people and all of the people in my work have influenced me or motivated me in one way or another. I'm a Muslim, so Elijah Muhammad, Warith Deen Muhammad and Malcolm X of course are influences on me. And Bob Marley and Pam Grier are influences of Black people who were courageous and good people who gave back to their own. Not to mention the Obamas. That's how I pick people to feature in my work. And now I'm trying to evolve in my work to bring attention to issues and to help people improve themselves."
Lonnie didn't consider himself an artist when he first went to prison. In fact, he says, "when I first started this I couldn't draw a stick man, but I started at it and worked on it because I believed I could do it, and I wanted to change things within me. And my art is a very big part of me expressing these changes. Also I want people to know they can do anything if they work at it. I'm living proof of that." - Repost from Compassion Works for All
